Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development in collaboration with different local and international partners conducted a forum to boost the EBDN (Ethiopia Business and Disability Network) members.

Mr. Bob Ransom, ECDD’s senior advisor, opened the forum with the speech stating that it’s the time to Ethiopian companies to adjust their policies and practices to reflect international trends and to give attention to diversity in the work force.

In the event, panel discussion was held among different stakeholders, Mr Michael Shiferaw, HR Business Partner for Oxfam, Berhanu Teferra, Bekdes Group CFO and ILO’s representative Mr. Fantahun Melese were the panelist. The panel discussion highlighted the workforce situation in Ethiopia, regarding the diversity in companies and employment opportunities of persons with disabilities.

During the forum disability and inclusive employment, GBDN (Global Business and Disability Network) issued videos were run to the participants. On top of that, one of the most inclusive company of the year, Hela indochine apparel’s honorary video were presented.

The event was concluded with the award ceremony, naming Hela Indochine Apparel, Inclusive Company of the Year, 2019 and 25 new companies signed a pledge to join EBDN.

The Ethiopian Business and Disability Network (EBDN) in collaboration with ABEGA MANAGEMENT PLC organized a panel discussion on the employment situation of persons with disabilities in Ethiopia. Introductory remarks were made by her Excellency, Ms. Tadelech Dalecho, State Minster of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (MOLSA) and Mr. Bekele Gonfa, Board Chair of the Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD). Her Excellency discussed Ethiopian policy and legislation concerning the employment of persons with disabilities and the work of MOLSA in promoting employability. Mr. Bekele shared his experiences on the employment challenges facing persons with disabilities and the efforts made by ECDD in facilitating employment opportunities for women and men with disabilities.

The panel discussion was held at the Mosaic Hotel, Addis Ababa on 21 March 2017. The discussion was preceded by the screening of a video on employees with disabilities who obtained employment with ECDD intervention and became productive workers. They also shared the attitudinal and physical challenges facing workers with disabilities.

Representatives from disabled persons’ organizations, international development actors, private companies and disability inclusive employers attended the discussion and gave their reflections on current policies and practices. They also made recommendations to increase employment opportunities for persons with disabilities from a rights based perspective.

The panel discussion will be aired on the ‘’ኑሮና ቢዝነስ” (“Nurona Business”) TV Show on Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) at a date to be announced later.
